General Roustabout:
The roustabout employee is a untrained Employee. He realize especially physical activities on a drilling platform. The functions of a roustabout are particularly cleaning activities, heavy lifting-, drag-and draw activities and to order the workplaces. The roustabout with experience and/or any training can and should be put in for the usage of basically machines and equipments.

Maintenance Roustabout:
This employee keeps the condition of the deck clean, makes sure that everything is cleaned up, performs minor repairs in the maintenance. So that no accidents can be happen (Safety First). He is also used as a painter under supervision of the Painter.

Roughneck:
This is a function for the light trained employee. The roughneck gets everything for his chosen. Of heavy lift conditions till connecting the pipe to oil caves. But it can be that he gets the responsibility to take care for the coffee in the morning on the workplaces. The roughneck realize all work activities where his colleagues in a higher class got no time for. Out of the position as a roughneck he can grow up to a Toolpusher, Painter, Floorhand or Derickman.

Toolpusher:
The Toolpusher has many different work activities. Of light administrative work, working as a divisions head, till reporting to the Master of Installation Manager. He takes care of all necessary tools, equipments and supplying the platform (the Rig). A Toolpusher has begun often at the bottom of the ladder and got himself up after some work experience.

Painters:
This function is especially based on the responsibility of the Oilrig, to keep it in top condition. Because all substances on the sea (salt water, oil, sand) care for corrosion. The painter works on different heights. He works a lot together with roustabouts and scaffolders. The painter has a little bit a dangerous function, where he regularly on big heights, hanging in a harness needs to work.

Floorhand:
The responsibilities are maintenance activities, helping with mixing of the mud for the drilling activities, mixing of chemicals and assist the whole crew. We call this also a junior position, where the floorhand has to learn working in a team. In this function you work very hard. You are doing heavy work and making long hours. One of the advantages as a Floorhand is you can be put in different teams. Thereby you learn all sides of the job in different functions, so you can grow up inside the crew.

Derrickman / Derrickhand:
In this function you are directly under the Driller function. So you are the helper of the Driller as regards to maintenance of the equipments, pumping and mud systems. Besides you need to work on high heights at the top of the derrick. The derrickman accomplish with a safety harness and the usage of climb instruments his job. For example leading of the drill pipe. Another work activities are assisting the Mud Engineers with controlling the density of mud and to maintain the viscosity. The Derrickman works long days and in every weather condition. In relation to the skills, physical effort and the rate of danger, has the derrickman the most challenging and toughest job of the whole Rig Crew.

Driller / Assistant Driller:
The drillers job is to pull gas out from the earth. He takes care of the samples and take tests of the oil. He has the supervision of all drill activities that are accomplished by the crew. Where the driller has the responsibility for the accomplishing of the work activities on the drill location. A Driller has many years of experience where he reports to the Rig Manager.

Crane Operator / Assistant Crane Operator:
The Crane operator, a desirable job, is responsible for all work activities. For instance supplying out of the ships and crane activities on the platform itself. He has the supervision of the Roustabouts and the Crane assistants. De cranes are used for supplying the platform of drill pipes, rig equipments, castings, food etc. The Crane operator lifts these aspects carefully on the rig oil platform. He has also the job to intend the Rig Floor of lifting activities and to mark the drill pipes. In this function you need to have fast reactions , very good eyes and insight in depth and distance. Other tasks for the Crane operator are paint activities, cleaning and maintenance activities on the Rig.

Motorman:
A motorman makes part out of the crew whose are responsible for the maintenance of the Rig motors and transmissions. The other crew is making repairs and the motorman is especially busy with preventive maintenance and little repairs. Next to the responsibility of the motors he also works to assembling pump equipments, replacing the drill pipes, drill voices and drill bites. The Motorman fastens the pumps and hoses to the nozzle, assist the service of Drilling Mud Systems. The Motorman is frequently allround employee as regards to all hydraulics, pumpsystems and diesel motors. The Motorman is also supervisor of the Floorhands.

Scaffolder:
The Scaffolder builds scaffoldings and breaks them off when the construction or paint activities are ready. On an oil Rig it can be that scaffoldings not only above get designed but also floated next or even under the Rig. As a scaffolder you follow strict rules for your own and others safety. It is a tough job which is sometimes in heavy weather needs to be done. Good eye coordination is very important just like a good physical condition. Scaffolders working very hard but keep an eye on safety.

Cooks and Bakers:
The cooks and bakers preparing daily many meals of high quality for all personal on the Rig. The mood and the energy of the employees are closely linked to healthy food. Most of the employees are working on the rig in services of 12 hours on, 12 hours off. So it is important that they eat well. The Cooks and Bakers on the Oil Rig are every day ready to prepare good meals, sometimes even better as in a luxury restaurant.

Rig Mechanic:
The Mechanic performs routine maintenance work. Often preventive to ensure that the machines and equipments keep functioning. On the basis of a checklist checks the Mechanic engines, hydraulics, systems, replenish necessary fluids/oil, replacing filters and other maintenance work. He is mostly working alone or with an assistant. The Mechanic finds themselves in close locations, but also at high heights such as on roofs, ladders, towers, in the mast and/or in narrow crawl spaces.

Rig Electrician:
An Electrician on the oil rig, installs, maintenance, solves problems and run tests. He fixes electronic equipments and systems on board of the Rig. The Rig Electrician can also work for instance on electric transmissions and distribution equipments. For all performed work he should have a log to keep track of and to submit this to his superiors.

Engineer:
Engineers features are there enough on a Rig. Drilling Engineers, Chief Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Pump Engineers, Field Engineers, Mud Engineers, Pipeline Engineers, Petroleum Engineers, just to name a few. The work of the Engineers and his jobs are of course different by function as well as the workplace where the Engineer is stationed.

Rigger:
A Rigger is the person on a Rig that is responsible for moving extremely large and heavy objects such as, for example, the Rig itself. The Rigger has specialized in this job, which can`t be performed out according to the normal methods, where sometimes the objects can be thousand kilos. For this he uses special equipments which is designed to lift objects. This work is a speculation, so it is generally only taught in practice (internship) because the experienced Rigger learns the trainee how to act and what to do. Riggers are working in teams where the cooperation is very important, as it is often dangerous work, where everybody should rely on his colleagues.

Rig Welder:
In this function, you are often permanently stationed on the Rig. as a welder you perform repairs and you take care of the construction of new metalworking. For large projects it is possible that there are entire teams need to be hired, then the welder goes from Rig to Rig depending of the projects. The job as a welder is subject to Entry Level jobs. Even without specific training (apart from a welder training) you can be put to work on a Rig.

OIM (Offshore Installation Manager):
This authoritarian individual should officially be registered as OIM “Offshore Safety Division”. He is responsible for the health, welfare and safety of all personnel on board of the oil drilling Rig. The function is not available as Entry Level, and not even from promotion. There should be a special training been followed including official registration as OIM before he can even start.

HSE Officer (Health, Safety & Environmental):
As HSE Officer you support, advise and inform all staff members in the field of working conditions and safety. You analyze specific points of interest, and support in the implementation and optimization of VCA certification. You follow the safety regulations and review this developments to the current conditions on board of the Rig. In addition, you support in analyzing incidents and/or accidents and you have to study options to prevent these in the future.

Pipefitter:
In this function you assemble, create, repair and maintenance the Pipe fitter, pipelines and systems. For this job you need to be well trained, you can do this through experience based on internships and/or training. The Journeyman Pipe fitter get mostly to do with industrial pipelines and heating/cooling systems. He installs or repairs pipelines or tubing systems that contain liquids, gas and sometimes solids. The work consists out of selecting and preparing of pipelines or hoses, connecting different means in various locations. In addition, repairs and/or prevents the Pipe fitter of leakages.

Storekeeper / Warehouseman:
In this function you are responsible for the maintenance of the warehouse on board of the oil Rig. The Store keeper order/keep the stocks and process new stocks. It is important to use a computer , so that stocks and orders can be tracked and updated. Despite Rig to Rig may vary, this is often an Entry Level position, but with space to grow in this function. As a Store keeper/Warehouseman you usually start as “Materials Handler” in which one can grow till Senior keeper. Mind you, this function is still sometimes performed by women (who are in the minority on a Rig). In addition, this worker needs to be standby for 24-hours for the confirming of incoming goods and/or publication of materials.
